If you really are on a tight budget then perhaps look at refurbishing your salon one area at a time, when funds become available revamp each section bit by bit.
This does require a good amount of planning & forethought because you do not want a salon looking half done.  A piecemeal refurb with a salon looking constantly half done is perhaps worse than not doing anything at all. A good place as any to start your refurb, because the salon window is the first thing your client views, and it is defiantly the only thing your non-clients view as they walk past. 

Why not give the passing trade a window display that grabs their attention and makes them realise that perhaps your salon is the salon they should try.  

Boosting your curbside appeal via decorating your shopfront can be achieved without much effort or expense. Perhaps a simple clean & declutter of existing notices & posters?  

Take a walk outside and look at your shopfront from a different position than you normally view every day, you may be shocked by what the public sees.  Look at floral displays, free marketing material from suppliers, remember "less is more"

Wooden framed windows with a fresh coat of paint will transform the salon appearance.

Plants, vertical garden walls, s…. Dedicated lighting above, around the reception desk, discrete calming lighting in the waiting area, here comfortable colour neutral chairs. Look at pictures from other industries, hotels are a great example.

If you consider your "downtime" as free time then this tip shows you can refurbish your salon for free!

Like every person Being in your business day after day, we sometimes overlook the obvious: salon ceiling lights, its the same with our homes. Spend a small amount of time taking down the light shades, diffusers or panels and clean off the dirt build-up, once replaced your lights will shine twice as bright.

Taking this one step further do any of the bulbs in your salon ceiling lights need replacing?  Don't simply replace the bulbs individually, think as this as an opportunity to slowly upgrade your salon lighting requirements, you should salon should be moving towards a led light salon.

LED salon lights last a lot longer than traditional bulbs, use considerably less power & can throw out much better light for you to work under.  The downside is that led salon lights are so good if you replace one you need to replace the rest otherwise your salon light is too varied to work under.

The average total cost per year of an LED light bulb is £2.78, assuming typical usage of 10 hours per day. On an annual basis, with electrical consumption and purchase costs considered, an LED light bulb is 12% cheaper to operate than an energy-efficient fluorescent bulb, and 74% cheaper than an incandescent bulb. 

The tip to do this cheaply is to break down your salon into various zones, move all your working salon ceiling lights to one area, and then when you replace them with new bulbs you will have a complete new led salon light section.
Repeat over time & you will have completely swapped over your salon ceiling lights to led salon lights.  Better light for your working conditions, better for the environment, and more importantly lower your electricity costs.

For beauty rooms, you can add colour-changing led beauty salon lights.

Adding salon mirror lights is a low-cost design feature, that we will cover in point 15 along with hair salon light fixtures.

Once you have addressed your salon ceiling lights turn to a feature light.

Salon Feature Wall Lights or Feature Ceiling Lights

For a very small cost, you can create a very large impact with feature lights, either from ceiling lights or wall lights. But to round off your salon refurbishment in style, either of these lights will have to be in a featured position wall or ceiling.  The latter ceiling will be the easiest to position to perfect your salon interior design: In point 12 we discuss feature wall designs.

Budget Feature Lights: Shop

Ideal for any salon on a budget wishing to refurb their salon: paint is the cheapest wall covering on average paint colour costs £2:00 to £3:50 per square meter, whilst wallpaper costs on average between £7:00 to £10:00.  

White paint can be found for half this cost, but if we are making the effort to redecorate by painting add a colour, don't go white, if it has to be white pay the extra for off white or shades of white.

These are the material costs and not labor.  You can of course find cheaper, and as we discuss later if you are looking at creating a feature wall finding odd discontinued wallpaper is great.

But in normal circumstances, paint is your best & cheapest option.  Plus the range of colours is so vast the only limit to how you create your salon interior is your imagination.

Although painting your salon is a great budget-busting idea beware there are many pitfalls, explains design guru Mike Cooper - "paint a wall too dark & your could create a salon interior that appears too narrow, too light and the salon looks empty!"  We have created a free download advice booklet "Salon Design Paint Colour Schemes" 

A feature wall decoration is a space that is coloured or designed differently from the overall salon interior design and adds interest and energy to that room.

Where in a salon should we put a feature wall or a feature decoration?  Ideally, a feature wall is a space that your client will first see when they enter the salon or a room.  We put 3D calming wallpaper designs on the rear walls of beauty rooms, so upon entering clients are instantly relaxed. 

 small walls such as behind the backwash or room dividers also work well as feature walls. But try not to use walls with doors or windows, as these will detract from the overall impact.

You can create a feature wall in your salon for very little expense

Budget ideas on how to create a feature.

• Use a contrasting colour to the overall color scheme, a colour that is deeper. - Visit outlets that mix paint & you will find tins of "mistake" mixed paint ideal for your one-off wall, expect to pay £1!!
• Perhaps feature a media digital screen. - no upfront purchase is required!
• Barbers create great feature walls with various framed sporting pictures. - source from charity shops!
• Try covering in a different material entirely - beauty salons try bamboo. £1 discount shops sell rolls of bamboo fence. Or  Artificial Grass as a feature effect: we have a guide on the Benefit of Artificial Grass which I think you’ll find relevant. 
• A large mural? ask a local artist, work out some commission on future work, or see if they will do it as a free advert!
• Wallpaper - a feature wall will usually be a small area so many only require 1 or 2 rolls of wall paper.  Look for end of lines, discontinued rolls.  we have picked these up for as little as 50p a roll!  Look for bold coloured and or with big print & patterns. 

By offering free advertisement one would assume you could get any local artist to come to hang some of their art, you could even look at some commission on sales!

Better still any local street artists? 

 Consider adding touches of the latest trends, but don’t rely on them in your redesign. What looks good now might not next year.

Not only a great idea for budget salon revamps but also good for the environment.

Whether you are a hair, barbers, or beauty salon look at keeping your styling/make-up mirrors and simply add a form of decoration.

Our design studio team has created new frames for mirrors that have totally transformed a salon interior. You can even simply purchase "garlands" either as flowers, palms, or woodland effect, these are available with optional led lights costing as little as £10  Again imaginatively dropped over the mirror top & sides will create a new salon ambiance.

As mentioned for a slightly higher expense we can build rear storage shelves behind each styling mirror to help with the declutter.

Salon mirror light, think about running thin but effective led ambiance lights behind the styling mirror edges, mood-changing light colour so you can adjust at night, to attract & advertise to passing customers at night.

One great tip is to look at the budget range of salon equipment on offer from any manufacturing company that also makes high-end salon equipment. These budget items will be made by the same technicians and craftsmen that manufacture their own high-end furniture. The budget equipment will contain materials that the manufacturer uses in their high-end furniture. The budget range will inherit some of the styles & designs featured in the more expensive items, all the style DNA but at a lower ticket price.

An example of this is our "Express Mr. Paul" salon chair from Pietranera Salon Furniture selling at 50% less catalogue model.  Both chairs have the same frame, hydraulic pump, chrome arms & seat padding, both manufactured by the exact same craftsmen & machines, the only difference is the "Express" model only comes in black, but is 50% cheaper!

We have recently completed a hair salon refurb where the salon owner split the salon equipment budget between a high-end curved salon reception desk for that first impression impact & 8 curved Plaza salon chairs from the manufacture Salon Fit.  The desk we manufactured in gold laminate & the chairs are priced at only £235ea, by mixing the 2 priced categories they kept within budget and managed to achieve the curved design look they set out for.

Another option is to mix the salon equipment cost selection and buy some high-end furniture that will have an impact on your salon's overall interior design & improve the quality of your service. For example, think about a spa backwash area with high-end massaging backwash units, then cut your budget on the styling mirrors and be creative on the salon decoration around the mirrors so the salon keeps that overall high-end appearance.

This is a perfect example of how investing in a good salon designer will pay dividends!

"second hand beauty salon equipment for sale" this was an advert we ran to try and sell off all our old display beauty salon furniture we had in our salon equipment centre.  All the inquiries we received thought the furniture was actually second hand beauty salon equipment used & abused, & not unused ex-display or items we had taken to exhibitions in a perfect condition. The moral is do not be put off from inquiring about second hand salon equipment, these items can be the ideal purchase for budget-conscious buyers.

If you are looking for single items like a new beauty couch for example then enquire about ex-display items, salon furniture that was used at exhibitions even second-hand salon equipment.  Ensure you still have a manufactures warranty and that the equipment is fit for your purpose.

Electrical second hand salon equipment: buy from known sources, there are a number of experienced service agents that sell second hand salon dryers & processors, these are great deals for those looking on a budget.  Also, check the items have been PAT Tested by qualified engineers.

On completion of a budget salon refurbishment, having a signature piece of furniture central to the interior design will turn heads and be that wow factor you were trying to achieve.  A new focal point. Talk of the town, and with careful searching, there are a lot of examples to choose from.

One option is to have a statement piece of furniture custom-made, this might cost slightly more than buying from the high street but if you have the budget it is well worth the investment because a statement salon furniture piece will only attract new clients into your salon so think of it as an investment. Don’t forget how you can do use this furniture piece in all your social media posts. You will soon forget any extra cost the signature furniture piece may have been when you realise all the new business that has been generated.
