This is typically the most common method of washing hair in a salon.  Primely because of the purchase price and ease of installation. There is a number of options and functions you can choose from and this will affect your purchase price.  Because 95% of all clients visiting your salon will require a hair wash purchasing a good quality backwash is imperative. Look for a good warranty not just comfort, style, and budget price.  Because we not only supply but do offer an installation service with salon backwash units we are only listing models that we feel are professional for salons, regardless of cost.

Buyers guide of options, styles, and prices for salon backwash units:

• Basic, no colour option. • Basic, with manual leg lift, only in black colour.  Look no further than the Manhattan backwash with leg lift from Salon Fit on offer currently at £795 with free delivery, supplied with taps and waste.  The leg lift is via a lever.  This backwash is styled with curved arms that are fully upholstered as is the leg lift, the ceramic basin is a deep basin on a tilting mechanism.
• Basic, with electric leg lift, only in black colour.  Very limited market for this option, as most salons going for electric leg lift will also pay for a coloured upholstery.  However Inspiring Salons offer exclusively the Metri at £999 Fully upholstered body with cushioned arms, deep tilting basin and a cushioned electric leg lift.  Metri Details. • Mid-range with upholstery colour choices. Here we come back to the Lady1 only £694, as previously mentioned the Lady1 excels in comfort and build quality, pay slightly more and you are able to choose any of the available upholstery colour options. COLOUR FINISHES.  You can style with 2 colours at no extra cost, again black or white ceramic tilting basin supplied with a mixer tap and waste, 66cm in width and 130cm in length.  For an extra £63 you can have the salon backwash in a stylish white body.  (pictured above).  In this category of salon wash point with upholstery colour options come a number of REM units - remember we are only listing salon backwashes that we feel offer reliability AND comfort, price is the third option! These last 4 categories of salon backwash become like when buying a car so full of options the choice is endless.  But I hope our little guide here will help cut through some of this.

• Mid-range with upholstery colour choices and leg lift.  First off as professional salon designers we at Inspiring Salon Designs always recommend salons think hard about investing in salon backwash with electric leg lift but no massage.  There is 2 categories of salon backwash chairs, those that are fixed permanently in a reclining position and those that have a reclining mechanism.  This latter category of salon backwash chair is multi-functional and you could class every salon barber's chair into this group.  But  we will keep just to salon backwash chairs.  Because the sales of backwash chairs are relatively low the prices of these uncommon backwash chairs are relatively high, having said that there is a vast price range to choose from.  Salon backwash chairs fixed in a reclining position - Eko fixed on a 5 start gas lift base only black in colour (colour option 6-8 weeks delivery) black plastic arms £126. If you are using a salon backwash chair to wash hair then you would be using some sort of a basin, backwash sink, frontwash sink, or a portable sink.

Fitting a backwash basin to a counter or cupboard will involve using a tilting mechanism, although a fairly simple piece of equipment if possible we would suggest purchasing backwash sink with a tilt mechanism fixed. These we sell for £130 standard basin or £284 for the deep Sumo basin.

Once you have chosen what salon basin you intend on using with your salon backwash chair, you will need to either buy a unit to mount the basin or make your own unit.  It is possible to purchase a unit with a basin attached.  REM Aqua Pedestal £557 The Aqua Pedestal Backwash unit is designed to be space-saving and can be used with any backwash chair which has to be purchase separately, it features a silver pod and comes complete with a deep, white porcelain basin and monobloc mixer set as standard. A link unit, with a plastic bottle tray to the top, is available to link two or more units. It can also link to the Aqua Pedestal Frontwash unit. The Aqua front wash pedestal £652 The Aqua Pedestal Frontwash is designed to give easy access for wheelchair users. Both Aqua pods feature a silver pod with a timber top structure which is available in any REM laminate - the silver pods hide the plumbing.

Another option is the portable backwash basin, which is simply an acrylic shallow basin on a small stand, very light & portable.  No taps as you have to pour your own water, and a hose as waste, these are very popular with mobile hairdressers, hospital workers & in old peoples homes. Prices from £59.  The Golfo from Ayala is foldable and comes with its own waste bucket/reservoir all for £123

The monoblock standard taps that come as standard with the majority of salon backwash basins and front wash taps are very similar.  The main point of difference is the standard of the basin shower hose and showerhead.  You can purchase water-saving showerheads as complete units or water savers as an insert in the existing showerhead, these cost £9 for a set of 4 with tools.

Standard mixer tap set, which includes mixer valve, shower hose & black hand spray sells for £82, with free delivery BUY Just the mixer tap without the shower hose & head £55.  You can buy individual showerheads either, chrome, grey plastic or black.

As a step up it is worth considering thermostatic monoblock taps.  Sometimes thermostatic taps are required, when we fit out salons in shopping centers & department stores the landlord insists on these, such was the case when we installed the 32 position salon in Selfridges.  The advantage of thermostatic taps is when the water flow adjusts the water temperature does not change for the client.  Takara Belmont's thermotactic taps also have a maximum temperature setting so no accidental burning of the client's head.  If thermostatic taps are chosen as an optional extra the charge would be minus the cost of the original taps you are swapping over.  Purchased as a one-off look around at paying £120

Just as with buying anything second hand there is always a % of the risk.  Can you view the product first?  If yes, look for the condition of the tilt mechanism.  Being close to the water the tilts are the first items to rust, a brand new salon basin tilt mechanism only costs £39, but the basin will need to be separated from the waste.  You may also require basin bolts.  The waste is also another issue to look at, buying second-hand I would always write off the existing waste and install new.  Check the shower hose & showerhead.  Is the chair fastened to the body securely? if not can it be tightened.  look at the backwash chair arms is there wear & tear?  If the salon backwash is constructed from a metal body check for rust especially around where the basin meets the frame.  Also check internally for rust.

This type of backwash is very popular with oriental salons and are slowly making their way over here to Europe.  There is a number of cheap imports on the market, we would suggest taking a hard look at the quality before purchasing.
