"Mike Cooper is a true legend of the hairdressing industry. Mike has always been our first choice for salon furniture and refits. Mike honest and practical with his advice which is very valuable in this industry. He always gave us a couple of options on how to get the biggest bang from our budget and was able to create the best options to ensure we obtained the best deal."
We used Mike Cooper to design and fit out a new salon that was an empty shell when we brought it. Mike was fantastic in helping us with the design and seeing what furniture suited best for our new salon space. He made sure the furniture was of the highest quality for our budget and not only looked fantastic but was durable for a very busy salon environment. I can not recommend Mike highly enough"
"we have been using the anti-hair trap wheels on our cutting stools since the summer of 2013 and in my opinion they are the best on the market. Not only do they work, are hard wearing and look good, they save the salon time & money. We are grateful for having taken this advice from Mike Cooper"

With the rise of social media feeds such as Instagram & Pinterest everybody has now become more confident with interior design, it used to be said that if you are not moving forward you are standing still. But now with more and more salons posting inspiring interior designs on social media, it is more accurate to say "if you are not improving your salon, it is now going backward" Now is perhaps the best time to start thinking about your hair salon refurbishment or low budget beauty salon interior design.
What is the ideal amount for a "Budget Salon Refurbishment"? Well, the amount will vary from salon to salon, but all will have the same aim, in refurbishing their property whilst spending as little as possible. A beauty salon may only be looking at refurbishing 1 therapy room with a budget of £3,000, whilst another salon may want a complete new look but not to spend more than £500. Both these scenarios are achievable and we have all the tips you need to help you create a stunning salon refurbishment on a small budget.
Please find our simple 17 point guide on how to achieve a successful salon refurbishment all on a budget.
Yes, perhaps instead of investing time & money on refurbishing your existing salon it may be more cost-effective to move premises. At Inspiring Salons we have been involved in many a salon that has been offered a financial incentive to move locations & these incentives happily coincided with the salon owners' ideas on refurbishing. However, you do need to check with your solicitor & landlord your lease conditions, break clauses and if any premium is being paid for you to make the move you are in receipt of the payment and not your landlord.
Downsizing is another opportunity and or opening a home salon, with our city & town centers becoming less busy with home working, perhaps now is the time for you to operate from a home salon. We have further details on home salon ideas with salon floor plans you can download also look at our dedicated home salon page.
So before you invest in refitting & revamping your existing salon premises take this opportunity to really decide if this is the property for your future salon business! You may even decide you require larger property.
Hire a professional salon designer! Over the term of the project, any credible designer will have saved you money and money. In fact, some designers will refund you their initial salon design fee. We here at Inspiring Salon Designs only charge an initial £150 fee which is 100% refundable*
Any project that will ultimately affect the outcome of your business should be treated with care & great respect, even if you are undertaking a low-budget beauty salon interior design and are considering carrying out all the works yourself. The small fee a salon designer would charge will be a great investment in your project.
A second opinion is not just reassuring but essential sometimes if you are thinking of carrying out any major work.
Having a second pair of eyes and fresh ideas looking over your salon refurbishment is only going to have positive results. "here at Inspiring Salons Ltd we will only offer 100% honest information, what we think is correct & where we believe there are mistakes, adding another dimension to the project" says Mike Cooper the salon design guru at Inspiring Salons.
And remember our salon design fee is 100% refundable*
We can supply salon floor plans, these scaled drawings bring your project to life and you can ensure that all the salon equipment will not only fit but will work & flow.
We have been carrying out 100's of salon refurbishments over many years so take advantage of this experience, tap into our access to trade discounts, alternative suppliers, and new innovations. Be honest with the budget & any good salon interior designer will get you your result.
Here at Inspiring Salon Designs, we create the salon of your dreams
So you are thinking of starting a salon refurbishment, what do want to achieve?
These are just some of the reasons to revamp your salon, all equally as good as each other, but whatever the reason or issues the first step is to list what, why & how: then what will it cost in time and MONEY.
Use mood boards, there is plenty of online mood board templates, magazine cuttings anything to get your ideas onto hard copy, then when you discuss with other parties, your staff, builders they can all visualise your thoughts & ideas.
From this planning, you will decide what is essential, what is a luxury, and what you can afford.
If this proves to be a step too much then ask for advice: 07415336002

If you really are on a tight budget then perhaps look at refurbishing your salon one area at a time, when funds become available revamp each section bit by bit.
This does require a good amount of planning & forethought because you do not want a salon looking half done. A piecemeal refurb with a salon looking constantly half done is perhaps worse than not doing anything at all. This type of refurbishment is very popular because if planned & carried out correctly the business can stay open during the revamp. "In my past, I refurbished B&Q superstores in a piecemeal fashion, department by department over a 3 week period, during which the superstores stayed open" quotes Mike Cooper MD of Inspiring salons Ltd
Use our experience! We have over the years carried out many such scheduled refits and Inspiring Salon's experience in project management is a clear advantage you could be using to your salon's benefits.
We cover many ideas on how to refurbish your salon on a limited budget: decluttering and splashing the paint, but understandably sometimes finance is required. We at Inspiring Salons Ltd offer all kinds of salon finance to help with refurbishments, from capital loans, building finance, stock purchasing loans, and salon leasing finance.
Salon furniture leasing is a great way for any salon owner working on a budget because the monthly payments are set for the duration of the lease enabling exact budget planning. There are also tax relief benefits and you own the equipment at the end of the term.
Equipment leasing is ideal for any salon wanting to obtain immediately new salon technology and the latest equipment because with leasing you take delivery of the salon equipment immediately.
And once the budget is set don't budge from this. Any budget should have a 10% surplus for unanticipated costs and contingencies. The important factor of budgeting is that if done correctly it will form the bedrock of your salon refurbishment, what you can & can not do.
Our design team at Inspiring salons will if asked look through any budget, advise if too much is allocated to certain aspects if you are being overcharged are you allocating too little to certain areas of the project. We are nothing but honest.
Just as at home the same applies to any workplace, decluttering will have an instant aesthetic impact on your salon AND it is really cheap to do. Any business will over time accumulate things, and these simply build up, getting rid of anything unwanted or reallocating to elsewhere will not only give you a sense of accomplishment but the appearance of a fresh start. Your clients will visually see a cleaner more efficient space. This decluttering could improve your salon's productivity & creativity. Clutter also attracts dust & allergens which decreases your air quality.
We also supply REM who have a collection of storage units built behind salon styling mirrors - Rimini, Oracle, Lunar and Icon just to name a few. Please have a look and we can quote you.
From our design studio we can manufacture any styling mirror storage unit and also storage for the shampoo area, beauty vanity units and barber station storage.
Think of salon equipment that can help you organize your salon's tools more efficiently. We design storage units build behind salon styling mirrors, we manufacture trolley storage sections where you can park your salon trolley. Or think about a salon trolley with draws for storage. how about a wooden salon trolley with a lockable door.
"By inviting our salon design team into your salon we can view your space with a fresh set of eye's and we will offer many cost-effective [even free] ideas on how to declutter" say Mike Cooper from Inspiring Salon Ltd
A good place as any to start your refurb, because the salon window is the first thing your client views, and it is defiantly the only thing your non-clients view as they walk past.
Why not give the passing trade a window display that grabs their attention and makes them realise that perhaps your salon is the salon they should try.
Boosting your curbside appeal via decorating your shopfront can be achieved without much effort or expense. Perhaps a simple clean & declutter of existing notices & posters?
Take a walk outside and look at your shopfront from a different position than you normally view every day, you may be shocked by what the public sees. Look at floral displays, free marketing material from suppliers, remember "less is more"
Wooden framed windows with a fresh coat of paint will transform the salon appearance.
Window graphics, scrape off and replace, perhaps with a different font, this slight change will be very noticeable to the passing public.
Hairdresser window decals, sans serif font for the lettering, available from your local high street signage company at good discounts.
There are many options for nail salon window designs, a quick glance on Pinterest for inspiration. Nail design is all about colours & shades so this is easily transferable into any window scheme.
One great salon window display idea is digital signage, the picture is of a screen in a beauty salon window and illustrates how effective these media screens can be.
But these digital displays are not just great for decoration they add benefit to your salon business, when we install digital signage the salons see a 33% increase in foot traffic and a 24% increase in direct retail sales.
As you are looking at undertaking a budget salon refurbishment then leasing these digital screens is your answer, no capital outlay, easy fixed monthly repaments with tax relief what could be cheaper?
The power of a first impression - think first of your salon frontage, so often overlooked, that curb appeal, passing traffic that is potential new clients. Reception is one of the priorities for any salon revamp, but it is so easy for the budget to run away with reception ideas: do we need a new salon desk? Should we invest in new salon reception furniture? It is easy to overspend, when in reality less is more, for those embarking on a budget salon refurbishment a simple revitalization & declutter will invariably suffice.
When planning the salon reception interior think the” Halo effect” Perfect reception = Perfect business. Heavy footfall throughout the day no matter what the weather, so a durable entrance mat/flooring of some sort, practical easily cleaned & aesthetically looking to the business.
The waiting area is a great marketing potential for positioning "digital media screens" again on initial cost so perfect for that budget revamp.
Think of introducing large-leafed plants, very cheap to purchase, does your local florist hire out? Could you work out a loan advertising scheme?
The reception is the clients break from day-to-day life stress & pressures to becoming tranquil & relaxed, colours – shades of blues, natural greens, white & pastels ( Related INFO ) But retain a colour theme reflecting your business brand. Plants, vertical garden walls, s…. Dedicated lighting above, around the reception desk, discrete calming lighting in the waiting area, here comfortable colour neutral chairs. Look at pictures from other industries, hotels are a great example.
“A little imagination here will go a long way to perspective for remaining salon”
If you consider your "downtime" as free time then this tip shows you can refurbish your salon for free!
Like every person Being in your business day after day, we sometimes overlook the obvious: salon ceiling lights, its the same with our homes. Spend a small amount of time taking down the light shades, diffusers or panels and clean off the dirt build-up, once replaced your lights will shine twice as bright.
Taking this one step further do any of the bulbs in your salon ceiling lights need replacing? Don't simply replace the bulbs individually, think as this as an opportunity to slowly upgrade your salon lighting requirements, you should salon should be moving towards a led light salon.
LED salon lights last a lot longer than traditional bulbs, use considerably less power & can throw out much better light for you to work under. The downside is that led salon lights are so good if you replace one you need to replace the rest otherwise your salon light is too varied to work under.
The average total cost per year of an LED light bulb is £2.78, assuming typical usage of 10 hours per day. On an annual basis, with electrical consumption and purchase costs considered, an LED light bulb is 12% cheaper to operate than an energy-efficient fluorescent bulb, and 74% cheaper than an incandescent bulb.
The tip to do this cheaply is to break down your salon into various zones, move all your working salon ceiling lights to one area, and then when you replace them with new bulbs you will have a complete new led salon light section.
Repeat over time & you will have completely swapped over your salon ceiling lights to led salon lights. Better light for your working conditions, better for the environment, and more importantly lower your electricity costs.
For beauty rooms, you can add colour-changing led beauty salon lights.
Adding salon mirror lights is a low-cost design feature, that we will cover in point 15 along with hair salon light fixtures.
Once you have addressed your salon ceiling lights turn to a feature light.

Salon Feature Wall Lights or Feature Ceiling Lights
For a very small cost, you can create a very large impact with feature lights, either from ceiling lights or wall lights. But to round off your salon refurbishment in style, either of these lights will have to be in a featured position wall or ceiling. The latter ceiling will be the easiest to position to perfect your salon interior design: In point 12 we discuss feature wall designs.
For as little as £28 the Alvstarr/Hemma pendant chrome ceiling lamp from Ikea [694.160.25] with Led bulb -ideal to sit above any reception desk or waiting area coffee table. For some further advice on hair salon lighting ideas design.

Budget Feature Lights: Shop
Ideal for any salon on a budget wishing to refurb their salon: paint is the cheapest wall covering on average paint colour costs £2:00 to £3:50 per square meter, whilst wallpaper costs on average between £7:00 to £10:00.
White paint can be found for half this cost, but if we are making the effort to redecorate by painting add a colour, don't go white, if it has to be white pay the extra for off white or shades of white.
These are the material costs and not labor. You can of course find cheaper, and as we discuss later if you are looking at creating a feature wall finding odd discontinued wallpaper is great.
But in normal circumstances, paint is your best & cheapest option. Plus the range of colours is so vast the only limit to how you create your salon interior is your imagination.
Although painting your salon is a great budget-busting idea beware there are many pitfalls, explains design guru Mike Cooper - "paint a wall too dark & your could create a salon interior that appears too narrow, too light and the salon looks empty!" We have created a free download advice booklet "Salon Design Paint Colour Schemes"
A feature wall decoration is a space that is coloured or designed differently from the overall salon interior design and adds interest and energy to that room.
Where in a salon should we put a feature wall or a feature decoration? Ideally, a feature wall is a space that your client will first see when they enter the salon or a room. We put 3D calming wallpaper designs on the rear walls of beauty rooms, so upon entering clients are instantly relaxed.
small walls such as behind the backwash or room dividers also work well as feature walls. But try not to use walls with doors or windows, as these will detract from the overall impact.
You can create a feature wall in your salon for very little expense
Budget ideas on how to create a feature.
By offering free advertisement one would assume you could get any local artist to come to hang some of their art, you could even look at some commission on sales!
Better still any local street artists?
Consider adding touches of the latest trends, but don’t rely on them in your redesign. What looks good now might not next year.
Not only a great idea for budget salon revamps but also good for the environment.
Whether you are a hair, barbers, or beauty salon look at keeping your styling/make-up mirrors and simply add a form of decoration.
Our design studio team has created new frames for mirrors that have totally transformed a salon interior. You can even simply purchase "garlands" either as flowers, palms, or woodland effect, these are available with optional led lights costing as little as £10 Again imaginatively dropped over the mirror top & sides will create a new salon ambiance.
As mentioned for a slightly higher expense we can build rear storage shelves behind each styling mirror to help with the declutter.
Salon mirror light, think about running thin but effective led ambiance lights behind the styling mirror edges, mood-changing light colour so you can adjust at night, to attract & advertise to passing customers at night.
One great tip is to look at the budget range of salon equipment on offer from any manufacturing company that also makes high-end salon equipment. These budget items will be made by the same technicians and craftsmen that manufacture their own high-end furniture. The budget equipment will contain materials that the manufacturer uses in their high-end furniture. The budget range will inherit some of the styles & designs featured in the more expensive items, all the style DNA but at a lower ticket price.
An example of this is our "Express Mr. Paul" salon chair from Pietranera Salon Furniture selling at 50% less catalogue model. Both chairs have the same frame, hydraulic pump, chrome arms & seat padding, both manufactured by the exact same craftsmen & machines, the only difference is the "Express" model only comes in black, but is 50% cheaper!
We have recently completed a hair salon refurb where the salon owner split the salon equipment budget between a high-end curved salon reception desk for that first impression impact & 8 curved Plaza salon chairs from the manufacture Salon Fit. The desk we manufactured in gold laminate & the chairs are priced at only £235ea, by mixing the 2 priced categories they kept within budget and managed to achieve the curved design look they set out for.
Another option is to mix the salon equipment cost selection and buy some high-end furniture that will have an impact on your salon's overall interior design & improve the quality of your service. For example, think about a spa backwash area with high-end massaging backwash units, then cut your budget on the styling mirrors and be creative on the salon decoration around the mirrors so the salon keeps that overall high-end appearance.
This is a perfect example of how investing in a good salon designer will pay dividends!
"second hand beauty salon equipment for sale" this was an advert we ran to try and sell off all our old display beauty salon furniture we had in our salon equipment centre. All the inquiries we received thought the furniture was actually second hand beauty salon equipment used & abused, & not unused ex-display or items we had taken to exhibitions in a perfect condition. The moral is do not be put off from inquiring about second hand salon equipment, these items can be the ideal purchase for budget-conscious buyers.
If you are looking for single items like a new beauty couch for example then enquire about ex-display items, salon furniture that was used at exhibitions even second-hand salon equipment. Ensure you still have a manufactures warranty and that the equipment is fit for your purpose.
Here at Inspiring Salons, we have a salon equipment centre where we have single brand new items of furniture, all as good as new, some only used as props in photographic studios, all of these at rock bottom prices, so shop around.
Looking for nail salon equipment just beware of staining on the nail desk & if the nail extractors are working if you are thinking of buying used
Electrical second hand salon equipment: buy from known sources, there are a number of experienced service agents that sell second hand salon dryers & processors, these are great deals for those looking on a budget. Also, check the items have been PAT Tested by qualified engineers.
On completion of a budget salon refurbishment, having a signature piece of furniture central to the interior design will turn heads and be that wow factor you were trying to achieve. A new focal point. Talk of the town, and with careful searching, there are a lot of examples to choose from.
One option is to have a statement piece of furniture custom-made, this might cost slightly more than buying from the high street but if you have the budget it is well worth the investment because a statement salon furniture piece will only attract new clients into your salon so think of it as an investment. Don’t forget how you can do use this furniture piece in all your social media posts. You will soon forget any extra cost the signature furniture piece may have been when you realise all the new business that has been generated.
Examples of a Statement Piece :
We invite all potential salon owners to our design studio to look over samples and wood finishes and discuss manufacturing options, or we can bring them to you on-site. We create 2D and 3D drawings of the furniture so you can see what you are getting.
Clients are also invited to visit the studio during the manufacture to keep a check on the build progress, if this is a non-option we communicate by mobile video.
Remember these “hero” pieces of furniture will take center stage in the salon and as an investment, they should be put to work, do not be afraid to feature in all your salon’s advertising and social media output.
For any advice on salon refurbishments please do not hesitate to contact Inspiring salons to discuss anything
